In January 2025, a woman found an emaciated puppy in a critical state roaming the halls of her apartment building. She was skin and bones, vomiting and weak.We rushed her to our partner vet for immediate care, who estimated her to be a few months old.

We named her Baby Gina.
The doctors worked to stabilize her, ran blood work and X-rays, and started documenting her body condition. Baby Gina was anemic, her proteins were low, and she had enamel hypoplasia, all from malnutrition. She also had a urinary tract infection and was at high risk of refeeding syndrome. Refeeding syndrome can appear in the blink of an eye and quickly becomes life-threatening.

The doctors monitored Baby Gina closely, and she remained hospitalized during this critical period. The good news was that she did not vomit after the first night, tolerated feedings, and passed stool.

Gina’s Adoption
Our phenomenal team of doctors provided her with around-the-clock care and watched her every move as she slowly moved out of the danger zone. Finally, we received the news that she was ready to be discharged.

To make the news even better, Baby Gina was adopted by one of our previous adopters. She gained two fur siblings, a big yard to play in, and more toys than she could ever dream of!

“I just wanted to say thank you from the bottom heart to everyone who took care of Baby Gina. From her rescuer, to Second Chance, and all of those amazing people on her medical team… you are all angels on earth! She is doing amazing, gaining each day. She had her first check up with her vet yesterday and she is doing very well. She is still very thin, but I don’t think it will be long before she’s where she should be…”

“…She settled in very quickly and her fur sisters adore her!… and she has a new name… Scarlett Buttercup. Buttercup was the first name my husband said when he saw her and Scarlett because my son said ‘as God as my witness, she will never go hungry again.’”—Scarlett Buttercup’s Mom.
