Harley’s Rescue

Posted on August 13, 2025August 13, 2025 by jawadahmed

At the beginning of January 2023, Mama Harley heroically escaped a life of horror and saved her puppies. Her collar was embedded in her neck so deep that her flesh was rotting, and attached to the collar was a 25-foot chain that Harley dragged while leading her puppies to freedom.

For a short time, Harley and her puppies breathed a sigh of relief. When they were discovered as strays, sadly, the only option for them was an overcrowded shelter where their lives were at risk.We tagged Harley and her babies for rescue and rushed them to a hospital for urgent care. Harley’s neck was ripped apart, and flesh wounds were visible, oozing with pus and blood. She was filthy, emaciated, and stiff when she walked.

Despite Harley’s enduring excruciating pain, she took wonderful care of her three precious babies, and they were all doing well.

Harley, on the other hand, was diagnosed with Tetanus, which affected mobility in her entire body. Little by little, she made progress every day and could trot around the clinic, love on the staff, and get some fresh air. Harley was incredibly sweet to all and knew that she and her puppies were safe.

After sometime passed, our heroic mama was officially out of the woods and onto the road to recovery. Dr. Terry informed us that Harley’s facial tissue may be permanently contracted but could relax over time. Harley was eating well, walking and moving much more fluidly, and spending time with the other dogs at the clinic. She was friendly, docile, sweet, and just a dream.

The wound on Harley’s neck was still in rough condition, but she was not yet well enough to be sedated to undergo surgery. She spent several weeks recovering at Dr. Terry’s at Lake Hartwell Veterinary Clinic.

And then finally, she landed in her forever home! Harley is living her best life and has a new furry best friend who comes over to playdates and walks. We couldn’t have Harley and her pups without the help of our generous supporters.

Thank you to everyone who supported this heroic mama and her babies. Thank you for joining our mission. We couldn’t save lives without your help.
